STEWED PEARS: A RECIPE FOR DRYNESS

The perfect recipe for dry/cold weather; stewed pears are an excellent way to hydrate and nourish your lungs which will bring back moisture to respiratory pathways and re-hydrate you from the inside, out. Traditional Chinese Medicine dictates that when the lungs aren’t properly nourished with adequate hydration and fluids, they become more susceptible to infections and inflammation. Two things you definitely do not want during this time!

If you are suffering from a dry cough, dry sinuses or extra dry skin- or even if you want additional ways to support your lung health during this vulnerable time, this easy recipe is for you.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium ripe pears

  • juice of half a lemon (or orange)

  • monkfruit sweetener

  • 3 cloves

  • 1/2- 1 stick cinnamon (optional: Please note that while pears are hydrating, they are also cooling so if you suffer from chronically cold and/or feet you should add cinnamon as it is a warming spice)

Instructions

  • in approximately 1/4 cup water, heat and dissolve the sweetener with lemon/orange, cinnamon and clove

  • While that is cooking, chop pears into large cubes/halve them

  • Place in the mixture in the stove, cover and cook for 30 minutes

  • Enjoy! Eat them on their own, top with granola, pair with [N}ice cream

As always, not all foods sit well with everyone. Listen to your body. Opt for fruits that are local and in season. This makes them easier on the body to digest (because less molecules that “defend the plant” against being eaten are released when ripe).
